Bhojpur district is one of the thirty eight districts of Bihar state. Ara is the police headquarters of Bhojpur district headed by a Superintendent of Police (IPS) officer. Ara also has a mounted military police camp. Bhojpur district came into existence in 1972. Earlier it was a part of Shahabad district. The district was named "Bhojpur" after the great Parmar king Bhoj as most of the early inhabitants were Rajput rulers of the Parmar dynasty then called Ujjainia. Presently Bhojpur district has three sub-divisions viz. Ara Sadar, Jagdishpur and Piro which is further divided into 14 sections. There are 228 gram panchayats and 1,244 villages in these 14 blocks.

After the battle of Buxar, the British captured Ara. One of the epicenters of the 1857 rebellion, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a group of 183 British civilians and 50 Indian soldiers were besieged at the Little House in Ara by a band of 2500–3,000 armed soldiers and about 8000 others. . Led by 80-year-old Veer Kunwar Singh, who is a zamindar of Jagdishpur adjacent. The city's land is fertile and used for farming with very little forest cover. The main crops grown here are rice, mango and mahua.
