《太平广记》是古代文言纪实小说的第一部总集。为宋代人撰写的一部大书。全书500卷，目录10卷，取材于汉代至宋初的纪实故事及道经﹑释藏等为主的杂著，属于类书。宋代李昉﹑扈蒙﹑李穆、徐铉、赵邻几、王克贞、宋白、吕文仲等14人奉宋太宗之命编纂。开始于太平兴国二年（977年），次年（978年）完成。因成书于宋太平兴国年间，和《太平御览》同时编纂，所以叫做《太平广记》。

《太平广记》引书大约四百多种，一般在每篇之末都注明了来源，但偶尔有些错误，造成同书异名或异书同名，因而不能根据它作出精确的统计了。书前有一个引用书目，共三百四十三种，可是与书中实际引出数目并不符合，大概是宋代之后的人补加的。

《太平广记》是分类编的，按主题分九十二大类，下面又分一百五十多小类，例如畜兽部下又分牛、马、骆驼、驴、犬、羊、豕等细目，查起来比较方便。从内容上看，收得最多的是故事，实际上可以说是一部宋代之前的故事的总集。其中有不少书已经失传了，只能在本书里看到它的遗文。许多唐代和唐代以前的故事，就靠《太平广记》而保存了下来。
